Fractional Resurfacing (Active FX/Deep FX/Total FX) Laser Treatment

What is Fractional Resurfacing?

Fractional laser resurfacing utilizes a high energy laser beam to soften fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and remove brown spots and other skin irregularities. Additionally, fractional resurfacing stimulates the formation of underlying collagen, meaning many patients see continued improvement for years to come. The name ‘fractional’ refers to the fact that only a fractional level of the skin is treated during each session. This means faster healing and speedier collagen production, all with less downtime than many other traditional resurfacing methods. Using the latest CO2 technology from the Lumenis device, Dr. Day and her team are experts in reliably delivering results that astound patients. This amazing laser technology can be harnessed through several different treatment protocols, the ActiveFx, DeepFx, and a combination of the two, the TotalFx.

ActiveFx is the CO2 laser skin resurfacing treatment for the active, busy person who would like to resume normal activities quickly while still receiving an effective resurfacing treatment. The fractional approach of ActiveFX leaves small areas of skin ‘untouched’ allowing for a faster healing process. ActiveFX targets surface layers in wider ‘bridges’ of skin, allowing the skin to heal efficiently and regenerate a layer of new, healthy skin.

DeepFX is ideal for the patient interested in dramatic solutions to deeper wrinkles and scars with a dermal component. While DeepFX also applies energy in ‘bridges’, the energy penetrates deeper into the dermis. DeepFX uses intense heating to immediately stimulate collagen tightening and jumpstart long-term collagen remodeling. This means the energy can be focused directly on to more prominent wrinkles, especially those around the mouth and eyes, resulting in pronounced tightening.

With TotalFX, Dr. Day combines the ActiveFX and DeepFX systems to provide one of her most comprehensive treatment. Surface level imperfections, such as sun damage and brown spots, along with deeper skin problems such as wrinkles, scars, and uneven skin tones, can all be effectively treated with this complete resurfacing treatment. For this reason, Dr. Day loves combining the two systems and recommends TotalFX for the majority of patients interested in resurfacing.

What can I expect for treatment?

The treatment itself lasts approximately 20 minutes, however you should plan for an hour visit as Dr. Day and her team usually apply a topical anesthetic cream prior to treatment to minimize discomfort. Patients typically report feeling a warm sensation as the laser is being applied. Many of the effects become visible immediately after treatment, however others - such as the formation of new collagen - build gradually over time and thus become more evident after 3-6 months. Patients who receive TotalFX treatment enjoy long lasting results. With proper sun protection, the benefits often persist for many years. The skin may feel red, swollen, and slightly crusted for four days after ActiveFX and up to eight days with DeepFx or TotalFx. The sunburn like symptoms will subside as the skin begins to peel and heal as new collagen forms, filling in fine lines, removing discoloration, and providing an overall tightening effect. Ice packs and prescribed medications can help manage any bothersome redness or swelling. As always, you can support optimal healing by protecting your skin from the sun and moisturizing with our recommended post-procedure skin care. If the skin is properly cared for, patients can feel comfortable returning to their daily activities soon after treatment.

  • Softening of deep lines
  • Improved skin tone and texture
  • Elimination of age spots and sun damage
