What is PRP?

PRP treatment (which stands for platelet rich plasma) harnesses the power of your own biology to stimulate cell growth. This potent cocktail of growth factors is isolated from a sample of your own blood. The platelets normally present in your blood play an important role in healing, allowing PRP treatments to help proliferate cell growth. The exciting and powerful science behind PRP is at the cutting edge of many medical specialties. Many patients are thrilled by the transformative effect PRP treatments have on their hair growth or skin rejuvenation journeys.

In our office, PRP is most commonly injected into the scalp to help stimulate follicular regeneration and hair growth. For this purpose, we offer either a formula with twice the platelet concentration of regular blood or a formula with five times the platelet concentration. Depending on your particular hair growth needs, Dr. Day will recommend the best PRP treatment for you. We also frequently use PRP as an enriching topical that can be applied during rejuvenating microneedling treatments.

What Can I Expect with Treatment?

A PRP treatment appointment usually involves 30-45 minutes in our office, where we will first draw a sample of your blood and spin it to the appropriate platelet concentration. If you are getting the PRP injected into your scalp, lidocaine will be added to minimize pain from injection. The injections are quick and relatively painless, and you can feel free to return to your daily routine immediately following treatment. If you are receiving the 5X concentration for hair growth, plan to be in the office for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Dr. Day and her team will numb your scalp by injecting lidocaine and applying topical numbing to your hairline. After the PRP injections, many patients prefer to go home and gently wash away any numbing cream in the shower.
