Ask Dr. Day: What’s the Right Way to Layer Sunscreen?

Ask Dr. Day: What’s the Right Way to Layer Sunscreen?

If there’s one non-negotiable step in your skincare routine, it’s sunscreen. But I get asked all the time: Where exactly do I apply it in the order of things? Before or after moisturizer? How do I reapply it without ruining my makeup? I get it—layering skincare can feel like a puzzle. And when sunscreen is applied incorrectly, you’re not getting the full protection your skin needs to protect it from skin cancer and premature aging.

Let’s break it down—layer by layer.

Why Layering Matters: Your skincare products are designed with different consistencies and functions. The general rule of thumb is to layer from thinnest to thickest: cleanse, then serums, followed by moisturizers, then sunscreen. That order helps each step do its job effectively—whether it’s delivering antioxidants, locking in hydration, or shielding you from UV damage.

Here's my step-by-step morning skincare routine:

1. Cleanse A clean canvas is essential. Use a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser that respects your skin barrier. Avoid anything too stripping, especially if you're using actives like vitamin C or retinol in other steps.

2. Antioxidant Serum This is where your protection really starts. My Vitamin C Serum is a powerhouse antioxidant that helps reduce the appearance of discoloration and sun spots, and adds extra protection against UV damage

3. Hydration Layer Even if you have oily skin, your skin needs hydration. I created Dew Drop Ultra to deliver deep moisture without heaviness. It feels soft and smooth and sinks in quickly. It’s great for all skin types, even if you’re acne-prone.

4. Sunscreen Now that your skin is prepped, it's time for your sunscreen. Vitamin E-ssential Sunscreen is a broad-spectrum SPF 50 with a sheer, elegant texture and antioxidants to help offer added protection against UV damage, and a light tint which makes it work well as a base layer, primer, or even your foundation before applying bronzer or blush.

Bonus Step: Makeup (If You Wear It) You can absolutely wear makeup over sunscreen. My favorite foundations and tints blend seamlessly over Vitamin E-ssential without pilling or patchiness. If you use a primer, apply it after sunscreen, but be gentle—don’t rub or overwork the product.

Reapplying Without Ruining Your Look

1. Powder SPF Mineral powder sunscreens are easy to dust on without messing up your makeup. Keep one in your bag or car.

2. SPF Mist If you’re wearing minimal or no makeup, an SPF mist can be a refreshing way to re-up protection.

3. Touch-Up Layer If you’re not wearing foundation, there’s nothing wrong with reapplying your original SPF with clean hands.

4. Set an Alarm Every two hours is ideal when you’re exposed to UV, especially during outdoor activities.

A Note on Layering with Makeup Containing SPF Yes, tinted moisturizers and foundations with SPF offer some protection—but don’t rely on them alone.

My Personal Routine (And What I Recommend for Most Patients) I use my Vitamin C Serum first thing every morning. After that, it’s Dew Drop Ultra, then Vitamin E-ssential Sunscreen.

Bottom Line When applied and layered properly, sunscreen is one of the most powerful tools we have—not just for preventing skin cancer, but for keeping skin youthful, even-toned, and vibrant.

Stay protected, stay radiant
