Everyone knows that they should be wearing sunscreen, but do they know why? May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, so what better time to talk about it!
Did you know that over 5 million Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer annually? BUT, most of these can be prevented!
Skin cancer can show up in several different forms– the four most common types being basal cell carcinoma (which is the most common cancer, not just the most common skin cancer), squamous cell carcinoma, merkel cell carcinoma, and melanoma. These are generally related to overexposure to UV rays which can come from the sun, sunlamps, and tanning beds.
Being sun smart is the key to preventing skin cancer. My patients may be tired of hearing me ask how often they apply and reapply sunscreen, but I’ll never stop. My motto is: If you didn’t reapply, you didn’t apply it at all!
Here are a few of my favorites:
In general, you should use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher that is water resistant and reapply every 2-3 hours.
Sunscreen isn’t the only way to protect your skin from UV rays. When you’re spending time outdoors, especially for extended periods, I always also recommend wearing a hat and sun-protective clothing.
Be sure to schedule annual check-ups with your dermatologist, skin cancer is highly treatable when caught early! Schedule an appointment at Doris Day M.D. by calling (212) 772-0740.
Bottom Line: Nothing looks more beautiful in your 50s than sun protection in your 20s. And, it’s never too late to start protecting your skin.
