"Use a wide tooth comb to avoid shearing the hair when it’s wet"

Did you know wet hair is more fragile than dry hair?

The Background: Hair is made up of 2-3 layers and the main protein that makes up your hair is keratin, just like in your skin and nails, although each have a slightly different type of keratin, which gives them their unique properties.

Hair is made from the bulb. This is the live, growing part of the hair that creates the keratin and other material that ends up being your hair. Once it passes this stage it is no longer alive but just gets moved along and longer as your hair growth. The bulb is deep within the scalp at the bottom of the follicle, which helps protect it from damage and stressors that occur closer to the skins’ surface.

The Problem: Modern-day methods of hair processing and drying, and even simple things like aggressively brushing your hair while it’s wet can do damage to this delicate organ.

How it works: The follicles on a wet scalp can dislodge more easily exacerbating hair shedding and loss. If you are undergoing a stress shedding, or other active form of accelerated hair loss or shedding, then that can cause the hair to shed even faster.

The Solution: Use gentle shampoos and conditioners that are designed to strengthen the hair and support growth. Always brush from end to roots making sure to minimize pulling when hair is wet. Use a wide tooth comb to avoid shearing the hair when it’s wet. Gently blow dry the roots with your fingers before using a brush to minimize the pull force on wet hair. You may notice most good stylists use this technique.
